Nurse Practitioner

Nurse practitioner is a registered nurse (RN) with additional specialized education. The nurse practitioner provides some of the same care previously offered only by a physician. Education for nurse practitioners includes advanced nursing and selected medical studies as well as intensive clinical experience in their field of practice.

For the most part, nurse practitioners treat patients with minor illnesses and women with typical health care needs. Some of these services include physical exams, including pap smears; health and wellness counseling; contraceptive care; STD screening and follow-up; pregnancy testing and care before, during and after pregnancy; evaluation and treatment of common infections; care before and after menopause; screening and referral for other health problems.
